I call myself something of a handbag fanatic – IMO, the accessory is more than just something to hold your stuff. And after waxing lyrical about the many benefits of carrying just the right tote or ditching the clutch, I have an even more important PSA for you to consider: Fall 2022 is full of statement bags that will enhance your look.

I have the upcoming New York Fashion Week to get ready for, and I plan on deploying the perfect bags this season to elevate every outfit I wear. Also, as small, functional pieces began to infiltrate my aesthetic – t-shirts, jeans, buttons, etc. – I needed a great accent to dress them up and make them more interesting. In the same boat? Keep scrolling to see a sampling of the season’s bags I can’t wait to get my hands on, including styles that include denim, crystal, metallics and matte textures.

(Disclaimer: All of this is, of course, practical when it comes to the running schedule between NYFW shows and presentations. My typical day might consist of eight shows, previews, and events scheduled on time. Every hour from 9 a.m. to p.m. until 10:00 p.m. So I refuse to part with my little statement bag, which I carry most of my life in a tote bag.)

Shiny things Absolutely Covering up a distressed, and cozy fall look with a glittery bag is an easy-yet-cool way to update a neutral look. Nina Ricci and Bottega Veneta are among the designers who opted for colorful metallics on the 2022 runways. For my part, I’m stocking up on a bright bag at the end of fashion week when I want to pick out what will be an end-to-end collection.

Let’s get Textural

My current favorite “pillow” bag from Poppy Lisiman is definitely at work for the next few weeks. As woven accessories continue to reign supreme, choosing an unexpected texture like popcorn, crochet or beading is the perfect refresher. Bright colors and unexpected materials make these pieces lively additions to any look.

New moon

The undeniably fall shape of the It bag is the curved crescent. A welcome update to the shoulder bag, this round silhouette comes in all forms, from logo embossed to classic matte leather. This bag will definitely rank with my all-important fashion week carry-all tote.

Fur your own good

One of my favorite things about fall is all of the textures and tones that come with cozy weather clothing—it’s not just limited to sweaters and coats. Sheer and fuzzy pieces come in shoes and bags this season, I expect to see all of the above.

Best jeans

Denim is a mainstay in the wardrobe. But lately I’ve been adding in jean accessories to revive my current (and forever) obsession: the Canadian tuxedo. I always go out of my comfort zone with different denim looks during fashion week, so a bag definitely adds purpose to the mix. Many designers have released blue jean versions of their classics, including Gucci’s Jackie bag and Balenciaga’s Le Cagole bag.

All that shines

Embellished pieces and going-out outfits are a post-pandemic staple and as a top pro, I’m totally here. These days, I don’t think there’s anything cooler than a white t-shirt, vintage jeans, old sneakers and a blind-studded crystal evening bag. Brands like Cult Gaia, Kara, and Benedetta Bruzziches complete the party bag, and at least one will definitely highlight after-hours NYFW outfits.
