FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio — A New Year’s resolution involving healthy mental health is what the Fairview Park Athletic Club is planning for its inaugural Warrior Wellness Summit.
“We were meeting about the different presentations we can offer our student-athletes and parents,” Fairview Park Athletic Club Vice President Dan Crandall said. “The topics that kept coming up were stress, pressure and mindset for not just the athletes but students as a whole.
“Coming out of COVID, we saw some things that were on our radar. We just decided to put this together and have some great presentations.”
The free affair open to all Fairview High School and Middle School students takes place at 7 p.m. Jan. 9 in the auditorium. Registration is required.
The evening’s guest speakers include Lauren McGowan (Ellie Mental Health clinical director), Flo Brett (Effective Leadership Academy founder and executive director) and D.J. Eidson (Limitless Minds president and cofounder).
Also attending the Warrior Wellness Summit will be members of the John C. Haney Memorial Foundation.
Fairview Park residents Rick and Beth Haney created the nonprofit in memory of their son John, a 2012 Fairview High School graduate who committed suicide in 2017.
The John C. Haney Memorial Foundation not only facilitates mental health first aid and suicide prevention training but has also helped open 18 “John’s Safe Place: A Space for All” locations in various Northeast Ohio high schools providing students a place to mental health break.
“We’re very pleased that Fairview Park Athletics are taking the initiative to educate and promote mental health awareness in our community,” Rick said.
While Fairview Park Athletic Club acts as the Warriors sports booster, Crandall said its mission is focused on giving back to the student-athletes.
That’s why more similar-minded events could be scheduled in the future.
“We already talked about other topics,” Crandall said. “Let’s just get the first one under our belt to see how it goes.”
