Facebook has said Donald Trump will be banned from his network for at least two years, a move that could spark tensions with the former U.S. president’s allies who accuse the company of censoring conservative views.
The ban was a review of an earlier indefinite suspension by Facebook, which was criticized by the company’s “supervisory board.” Last month, the board upheld Trump’s decision to oust Trump from the platform, but found fault with the ban for life.
The new suspension will take effect from the date of Trump’s initial suspension on Jan. 7, the day after Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, Facebook said. The company had banned it from its platform to support Capitol riot police. The ban will only be lifted if the company feels “that the risk to public safety has been reduced.”
“When the suspension is finally lifted, there will be a strict set of sanctions that will increase rapidly if Trump commits other infractions in the future, until the permanent withdrawal of his pages and accounts,” wrote Nick Clegg, Facebook’s chief global politics, in a blog entry explaining Friday’s decision.
The decision was formed as part of an announcement detailing broader changes to the company’s policies on how it moderates the discourse of influential public figures.
