Extreme heat can affect vehicles, travel plans.

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — As a heat wave barrels into California, people are bracing for some sun.

“I try to find a nice spot like a river or a lake,” said North Sacramento resident Robert Benoit.

AAA says there are a few things to keep in mind before you travel.

“We see a significant increase during the summer,” said John Traynor, a spokesman for AAA. “Roadside assistance calls up 25 percent.”

AAA’s reported causes of breakdowns include tire wear and dead batteries.

Combine underinflated tires with hot road temperatures, and a blowout can happen. Liquids in the battery can evaporate in extreme heat and weaken the charge.

The auto club told CBS13 it received 495,000 calls for help nationwide this past Labor Day weekend.

“We expect a 10% increase in the 2021 figure,” Traynor said.

AAA is prepared for nearly 545,000 calls this coming holiday weekend.

Trainer says you should always check your fluids during extreme heat.

The unforgiving heat affects not only the cars but also the roads.

CBS13 reports how The road on Highway 50 is stuck in high heat.

According to Caltrans, it’s no different than any other summer day ahead of the extended temperature forecast.

“If there’s a call for our maintenance crew, they’ll go to the scene, assess the damage and make temporary repairs,” spokesman Dennis Keaton said in a statement.

“If it’s a safety issue, it will be dealt with accordingly and immediately. Remember that in California they schedule inspections to replace infrastructure pieces like bridges to avoid malfunctions or close them immediately in case of an accident.”

Meanwhile, some motorists are heeding the warning to drive safely this weekend.

“He got my wife’s car out of the shop, so that’s good,” William Castle said. “My truck is in the shop with an oil leak, so hopefully, it’ll be okay.”
