Penny, a tiny Maltese-poodle mix, took to the red carpet for the second time at New York Fashion Week.

She was showing off one-of-a-kind dog couture pieces created by designer Anthony Rubio and was held by a model’s arm as she walked down the runway at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City on Sept. 11.

Manpreet “Preety” Kaur is making a name for her 16-month-old puppy by promoting it on Instagram (@PennyLuxeLife) and landing fashion and photography contracts. Penny models for Refruff dog sneakers and is the photography ambassador for Cara Merle.

Kaur lives in Exeter with her family while completing her medical studies and Masters in Business Administration. She said she saw her friend’s student’s dog littering with her neighbor’s dog and when she found Penny, she was hit by a small foul ball.

Late last year, Kaur saw a call to perform for Rubio.

“Usually all the rooms are full, but because of the pandemic situation, he had a casting call and I was like, ‘You’re not going to get this chance, but it doesn’t hurt to try anyway,'” Kaur said. .

Penny can’t believe she’s been chosen.

“I got the email, and I jumped up and screamed, because you know living in Berks County, this is a big deal for us,” she said.

At that first fashion show in February, Kaur was attended by many celebrities, including Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu.

“It was a great way to get a job and learn more about the industry, as a girl from a completely different background, a very, very different place in India,” Kaur said.

Penny said she was happy when she was chosen to model for Rubio on his recent show.

“I am very proud of my presentation at New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2023,” Rubio wrote in an email. “My collection includes 20 designs for humans and 20 of my Canine Couture designs.

“For the pets, they painted lots of glitter in bright colors, each one a unique work of art. These clothes represent how much our pets brighten our days, even in the toughest of times. As I’ve mentioned many times, our pets are mostly models from shelters and rescues, not accessories.

Rubio attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for women’s clothing and created human designs in the late 1980s to mid-1990s, the agent said.

After taking a hiatus from the design world until 2003, he was inspired by his adopted dog, Bandit, to launch Bandit Rubio Designs, a pet line. When Bandit died in 2011, the company’s name was changed to Anthony Rubio Designs.

Kaur, 32, was born in New Delhi, India and is a 2008 graduate of Exeter High School. When she first came to school in America, she said she had to learn English as a second language. She has no accent now.

Penny also continued her studies. In August, she became a certified therapy dog at Positive Hearts Pet Therapy & Rescue Inc. and toured the Rockland City and Berks County District Attorney’s Hogan Learning Academy for students with autism spectrum disorders.

She is also learning to use the “talk” buttons, Kaur said.

“So when she wants to go out or get treatment, she actually pushes a button,” Kaur said. “He speaks to me.

“It’s great because I’m teaching her to talk now.”
