Academic adviceBased on a partnership launched last year, sportswear designer Eric Emanuel has launched a $500,000 scholarship program with the Fashion Scholarship Fund.
Applications are now being accepted for students to join the five EE x FSF Scholars for 2023. The aim is to attract students of different educational levels and backgrounds. Created with $500,000 for the first five years of the program, the EE x FSF Scholarship Program selects five scholars each year from a variety of disciplines. Each person will receive a $10,000 scholarship, $5,000 in additional support opportunities, internships and one-on-one time with Emanuel and a network of industry leaders.
In an interview Friday, Emanuel said the importance of education was something he worked on at a young age. His mother was a first-grade teacher, and his father liked to joke that during his college years at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he “might be too smart to get a scholarship.” I got nothing,” Emmanuel said. “Sometimes the right people don’t get a chance for scholarship programs. By doing this, I hope I can give some kids a shot where people can’t give me a shot. I have had success in everything I do. It doesn’t make sense not to return that knowledge and financial assistance.
After majoring in marketing at FIT, Emanuel spoke about how important it is for college students to learn from each other, regardless of their major. It is said to create an entrepreneurial community to nurture future talents beyond the calendar year associated with the chosen scholars. That opens up opportunities for scholars to receive ongoing mentoring and to connect with scholars from previous years.
To qualify, students must currently attend one of the Fashion Scholarship Fund’s 69 member schools in the U.S. After posting about the new initiative earlier this month, Emanuel said he was DM’d by nearly 500 students who wanted to know what it was all about. Measures had to be applied. Applications are due October 17, and the scholarship winners will be announced in January.
“The response has been overwhelming. The streetwear world has a very young clientele. I think – even for many other businesses that have reached out to me – it was very important to encourage young people. Usually, most brands don’t care. I want to make my point, because education was ingrained in me as a child, not everyone has the opportunity you have.
The Eric Emanuel x FSF Scholarship Program is FSF’s second largest program, topped by the Virgil Abloh “Postmodern” Scholarship Fund. FSF continues to form industry partnerships to provide opportunities for its scholars – names with Skims, Neiman Marcus, Milk Makeup and others.
