This past weekend, thanks to a generous gift from a neighbor, the adults in our house put the calendar aside and had an Edmonds-style Saturday (afternoon/early before hockey practice). After visiting the Puget Sound Bird Fest and seeing a great talk about the Union Bay Natural Area, also known as the Montlake Fill, we headed to dinner. We stopped by the Crow at the Edmonds ARTspot to say hello to the owner, Jane Lawson, who we know (and love) from the preschool circuit. After running into another local mom friend I hadn’t seen in a while, we went out and saw the absolute best thing in their window, Fashion Plates.
As a child born in the 70s, fashion plates and day-to-night Barbie were some of my fondest doll memories. Vintage fashion plates allow you to take rectangular plates of models adorned with different outfits and mix and match body parts with different outfits. They would then take some kind of side crayon on top to sculpt the outline before adding color to your designs, a real dream come true for me. The configuration in the new version of the ARTspot window looks the same.
I love the idea that you can get fashion plates for the artist in your life, young or old, I think if it’s true the main reason I feel compelled to share the information is just to talk about fashion plates and ASMR. Kind of reaction I remember the crane sliding on the fashion top and skirt I chose. Besides that and figuring out how to cram in the weeknight events at the beginning of the school year, I love to think about anything. So before we get to the library help showing up in my inbox, let’s talk about two local options for upcoming parent/kid night outs.
I saw a flyer for parents night on Friday September 23rd from 5pm to 6pm at the Francis Anderson Bird Fest in Edmonds. Night out for children ages 5 to 10 and $28 for residents. As I read, “Students enjoy three hours of games, crafts, obstacles, fort building, gymnastics and more.” I see that they can be tired not only during free time but also at bedtime. Children should bring water and snacks and wear comfortable clothing. More information and registration can be found at RecZone.org.
Then I happened to be on their email list following a birthday party my son attended, so I saw that Hi Trek Everett offers a kids night on Fridays from 5pm to 9pm for 10 to 15 year olds. Up to 65 kids can “spend four hours of fun and friends, with the High Trek staff helping everything run smoothly. The four hours include refreshments and “four main activities: ropes course and ziplines, laser tag, mini golf and camping activities.” The fee is $65 per child and more information and registration is available at HighTrekEverett.com.
Okay, one more thing before we get to the very important, but school-related, library information. There’s a Kraken-themed corn maze at Stocker Farms in Snohomish. My teammates, especially one son, are big fans of our NHL team, the Seattle Kraken. I was sent a post about this mess via Instagram DM, which is how we meet half the time this time around, and it should be a lot of fun. Before opening for the month of October, Stocker Farms is open for the next two weekends. For more information and tickets, visit StockerFarms.com.
From Sno-Isle Libraries “You’re Not Alone! Back to school resources for students and parents. “Don’t forget! Sno-Isle Library is here to help students and parents have a great school year. The library has been responsible for many deep reliefs on my part and this was definitely one of them. With a library card, patrons can access “online learning, research databases, test prep materials, helpful videos, free print, and more.” I’m excited to see how-to videos through the library that explain how to get a free tutor, prepare for a big test, or get homework for middle and high school. For all this information and more, you can visit Sno-Isle.org or call your local library.

Jane Marks, Edmond’s mother of two sons, is always looking for a fun place to take her children who are too tired to get to bed on time.
