Innovative battery programs benefit all customers while strengthening the grid and increasing resilience, reducing costs and carbon

Vermont Business Magazine As temperatures soar into the nineties in parts of Vermont and New England, Green Mountain Power (GMP) is working with customers to reduce high energy costs and carbon emissions by using innovative energy storage initiatives while keeping our customers comfortable. High temperature.

A GMP pioneer and growing network of home batteries topped New England last week, cutting costs for customers by nearly $1.2 million, reducing energy demand during intense heat.

By feeding that stored energy back into the grid, GMP didn’t have to purchase additional power from the regional grid during those peak power periods when it was most expensive, saving customers money. GMP customers are not asked to reduce energy use during this period – they can use the energy they need to maintain comfort and safety during the heat without restrictions.

GMP has been working with customers on all the new devices they’ve deployed, including home batteries, off-grid batteries on solar stations and carbon-reduction devices like electric vehicle smart chargers. All combined with local renewable energy is equivalent to taking about 50,000 homes off the grid during peak periods.

“This is a critical energy transition that works in real time,” said GMP President and CEO Marie McClure. “We are working with our clients to directly offset the costs of the region’s important home and community-based resilience that is ready to respond to climate change.”

Already, GMP’s industry-leading battery programs have saved customers $3 million annually over the past several years. And as Vermont sees more extreme weather due to climate change, battery storage will continue to be key. GMP is undertaking a number of resilience and system strengthening projects as part of its active climate plan. The work will help communities prepare for an increasing number of hurricanes. Storage through GMP programs can help create a more flexible grid that allows for more local renewables.

“I love being part of the GMP Energy Storage Program because it helps everyone. It benefits me year-round because I stay powered during storms, and it also helps my neighbors and friends,” said GMP customer Lori Byrom of Pittsford. “On those hot days, I like knowing that my battery is feeding back into the grid, helping to reduce demand, which in turn keeps costs down. We’re making a difference in Vermont through sharing, innovation and great partners like GMP.”

GMP is the first service in the nation to offer customers full, administrator-approved home battery programs. During storms, participants get discounted home energy storage for seamless backup power, and customers agree to share stored power with all customers during peak power times. GMP programs include the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Enphase and Powerwall programs, and GMP works with commercial customers on custom battery solutions for their businesses.
