DoorDash job postings reveal the launch plan in Germany

The DoorDash food delivery app is set to launch in Germany, in what will be the first foray of the US market leader into the fast-paced market for European delivery apps.

The company shared 15 job offers Monday seeking to cover management, strategy and recruitment positions in Berlin. It’s still unclear when he plans to release it.

The move will follow Uber, which in April, he told the Financial Times which would bring its Uber Eats food service to Germany in a few “weeks,” starting in Berlin.

Earlier this month, Delivery Hero, which had sold its German business to Just Eat Takeaway in 2018, said it would re-enter the country under its Foodpanda brand. The Finnish Wolt has also recently entered the market.

New players are threatening to break the historic dominance of Just Eat Takeaway, which had the German market almost on its own for the past two years.

“Competition makes us stronger,” Jitse Groen, executive director of Just Eat Takeaway, told tweeted last week reacting to the news about the return of Delivery Hero.

DoorDash declined to comment on the company’s job offers or expansion plans in Germany. “We continually evaluate opportunities for expansion as we aim to further build our international presence,” he said.

DoorDash was expected to drive more in Europe, including the UK. The FT has previously reported the company was looking at acquisition targets in Europe, while the job posting for the German CEO calls for someone who can “develop a game book” for “faster” entry into other markets.

It is unclear what employment model would try to use DoorDash in Germany, where stricter labor laws mean that the configuration of workers it uses in the United States would not be allowed.

One of the announced positions, as head of government policy and relations, calls for a person familiar with the “political and regulatory environment in Germany and at EU level”.

Last month, Uber told FT that its food couriers in Berlin would be hired by fleet management companies, similar to minicab groups, hired by Uber and charged on demand. It is then up to the fleet managers to decide how to retain and pay the workers.

DoorDash is the largest food delivery application market in the United States, with approximately 55% of the domestic market, according to Edison Trends data based on sales in the last week of April. Uber Eats has 31%, while Grubhub, will soon be owned by Just Eat Takeaway, pending shareholder approval, has 13%.

DoorDash also offers more and more other types of products. Last week it was said that approximately 7% of the total orders now corresponded to comfort items such as toiletries, flowers or alcohol. In addition to picking up at existing stores, such as 7-Eleven, it also manages a network of more than 25 “Dashmarts,” stores from which couriers can pick up items to deliver quickly.

If you want to emulate this model in the German market, it will compete against Gorillas and Flink, two fast-delivery applications based in Berlin. Getir of Istanbul, a similar application, is scheduled to launch soon in Berlin.
