HARARE, September 5 (SINWA) – It was all fun and excitement in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, as fashion designers presented their collections to various fashion enthusiasts.
Designers included established local designers and Chinese fashion designer Amon Green, who brought Chinese Zimbabwean style to the runway.
Dubbed the Makanaka Fashion Show, the event held on Saturday night sought to provide an international platform for Zimbabwean designers to showcase their talents to the world.
The show, which brought together the Zimbabwean and Chinese communities, saw the intersection of music and fashion, popular music stars, local and Chinese, the runway.
Fungai Muzoroza, a local fashion designer, wowed the audience with her fashion collection titled “Zuyu”. Nezu means elephant in the local Shona language.
“I think what makes fashion unique is that I’m not in a box, I never want to say I’m a formal wear designer, or I’m a glam designer, I do everything,” she told Xinhua. The show.
Chinese fashion designer Amon Green left the audience entertained with his interpretation of Zimbabwe.
“I have visited many countries. I have adopted different styles, different fabrics and different elements to create a unique sense of fashion. I use those different materials and elements to create timeless designs,” he told Xinhua.
The opportunity to show the designer in Zimbabwe made him realize the beauty of African fashion.
Designer Rufaro Chikwara, popularly known as Big Locomotive, said the event elevated Zimbabwean fashion to the international stage.
“My fashion is unique because I don’t do the basic things that we see every day. I usually get crazy art from anime, I watch a lot of cartoons, I get a lot of concepts from there, and I try to bring that to life,” he said.
The event’s project manager, Tadiwanashe Maroa, said the Makanaka fashion show aims to bring the Zimbabwean and Chinese communities together.
The relationship between China and Africa is mostly focused on diplomatic and economic boundaries, but fashion and culture can help strengthen the relationship between the two sides, he said.
“I think this show was successful. We were able to combine Zimbabwean culture and Chinese culture. We were also able to put our own designers on the map because their fashion is also seen internationally, this fashion show is going global,” she said.
Tanaka Dumbura, Miss Culture Zimbabwe, said the platform would bring out creativity in local designers.
“I think this is a good initiative because we can see Zimbabwean designers. I believe that many times the Zimbabwean fashion industry is inspired by the West, which is a problem because we can’t see the differences in our own fashion industry, like African inspired fashion,” she said. ■
