LOUISBURG, WVDN (WVDN) – On Earth Day, April 22, the Democratic Women’s Club of Greenbrier County sponsored an “Earth Day Fashion Show” held at the Greenbrier County Library.

Hosted by Erin Hurst, the show began with local artist Susanna Robinson’s performance of Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” accompanied by a vintage accordion. The keynote speaker will be Lucy Refsland, the “Recycling Lady” who writes a recycling column published in five regional newspapers. She talked about the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing.

The fashion competition delighted the audience with 13 contestants modeling recycled and recycled fashion at the runway show. The professional award went to Julie Fain for her over-the-top outfit, made from a 60s mummu cape and pink mesh neoprene skirt. Deva Wagner won the grand prize with clothes salvaged from Goodwill and enhanced with vintage buttons and lace, gold stitching and hand-painted fabric roses.

The event was a fundraiser for Democratic Women’s Get Out the Vote and a demonstration that citizens should not respond to climate change with fear and deprivation, but with opportunities for new abundance and creativity.
