Corrections reported the death of an inmate in Rutland

An administrative review has been initiated into the death at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Vermont Business Magazine The Vermont Department of Corrections (Vermont DOC) is conducting internal administrative and medical reviews following Sunday’s in-custody death.

Jack Martin, 49, of Windsor, Vt., died Sunday afternoon at Rutland Regional Medical Center after being hospitalized Friday, Dec. 9. Mr. Martin reported having difficulty sitting upright while in his cell at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility. MVRCF) Friday morning in Rutland. Vermont DOC and medical personnel called for emergency medical services and Mr. Martin was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center.

The Vermont DOC reported the death to the Vermont State Police and the Office of the Defender General’s Prisoner Rights in accordance with state law and protocol. These entities conduct a separate death investigation in conjunction with the Vermont DOC’s administrative and medical evaluations. A Vermont DOC peer support group is available to MVRCF staff.

The circumstances surrounding Mr. Martin’s death are not currently suspicious.

Mr. Martin has been held without bail in the DOC jail since October 11, 2022, on heroin possession, assault and robbery charges. He was also arrested on a warrant from the Grafton County Sheriff’s Department in New Hampshire for possession of heroin.
