Children under the age of 18 have an “extremely low” risk of suffering from serious illness or death from Covid-19, according to new studies from a group of UK universities.
According to an analysis of public health data, only 251 children and adolescents in the UK were admitted to intensive care with Covid-19 for the twelve months to 28 February 2021.
During this same period, 25 children under the age of 18 in the UK died due to Covid-19, a separate but related study.
The authors of the two studies, as well as a related third, described them as “the most comprehensive data analyzes” to date on serious diseases and deaths from Covid-19 in children and adolescents.
The study, which focused on Covid-19 intensive care among young people, for example, examined hospital admission data between 2015 and 2021, relating them to data on intensive care admissions, deaths, and coronavirus test results.
Reports found that the risk of serious illness was slightly higher for young people with pre-existing medical conditions and severe disabilities who took Covid-19.
His findings will report on vaccination and quarantine policies, “not just in the UK, but internationally,” Russell Viner, a professor at University College London and lead author of two of the studies, said in a statement.
Researchers from UCL, Imperial College London, the University of Liverpool, the University of Bristol and York University, who conducted the analyzes, said they plan to present the three studies to the World Health Organization.
