CNET has reportedly been publishing financial articles using AI tech.

As reported by outlets like Futurism, CNET appears to be publishing some of its financial articles with the help of “automation technology,” or AI. The articles written by They appear to have started rolling out in November 2022, as spotted and tweeted by Authority Hacker co-founder Gail Breton.

After doing some digging, AI-authored articles are being published under the general author name of “CNET Money Staff” and titles such as “Should you break an old CD for better value?” It was announced that they will cover various topics.

Clicking on the author’s name, in this case CNET Money Staff, will provide additional information that says, “This article was created and reviewed using an AI engine, fact-checked, and edited by our editorial staff.”

Futurism goes on to point out that CNET isn’t the first outlet to use AI, with news agency The Associated Press using AI since 2014 to write earnings reports. In fact, it boasted of being one of the “first news organizations to use artificial intelligence.”

What sets the API apart from CNET here, however, is that the use of the API is focused (at least as far as we’ve seen) on filling in the blanks for predefined formats, such as the previously mentioned writing of income reports. CNET, on the other hand, suggests using something more along OpenAI’s GPT-3 lines and producing complete articles instead of filling them with empty stuff like financial data.

Of course, as CNET points out, these articles also benefit from being seen and published by real people before being published to the site. Overall, it’s interesting to see the ways in which AI can be integrated into tasks such as filling out data related to financial reports and even writing entire articles on finance-related topics.
