A Euro 2020 football match was suspended on Saturday evening after Danish footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch and medical staff struggled to revive him in front of shocked players and fans.
The game stopped towards the end of the first half of the match between Denmark and Finland in Copenhagen on Saturday, when Eriksen fell to the ground and began to convulse.
Several players and English referee Anthony Taylor called for help immediately. The medical staff rushed to the field of play and could be seen performing CPR for several minutes.
Eriksen’s Danish teammates formed a shield to provide privacy to the thousands of fans in the stands. The television coverage of the match ended shortly after.
The Danish football association later said Eriksen was “awake” at the hospital where his condition was “stable”.
Uefa said the match will resume after consulting the teams. Players returned to the field of play as fans of both teams chanted Eriksen’s name.
Eriksen, 29, is a star player who won the Italian Serie A football league this season with Inter Milan. Known as a creative midfielder, he has represented his country 108 times and has also played for some of the major European clubs, such as English Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax of the Netherlands.
The match between Denmark and Finland was the third match of Euro 2020, a one-month tournament that started on Friday and features 24 national teams playing in 11 European cities.
Competition had been delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with strict health and hygiene protocols adopted to help prevent an outbreak between teams.
