In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters at some of our favorite vacation spots, and uncertainty about airline schedules, planning a vacation these days isn’t easy. This goes double at the end of the year when traveling for the holidays can be really dangerous and stressful.

Fortunately, there are some San Diego and SoCal venues and events that don’t require advance reservations, and can be held outdoors.

Put these events on your list of things to see and do:

Highland adventure – If you enjoy long distance hiking in a mountain setting, check out this event to run in and around Big Bear Lake from September 27th to October 2nd. Participants can choose from three levels: a five-day, 60-mile course; a three-day 30-mile course; and on weekends, a 15-mile course. Participants hike sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, and organizers provide camp food, which is distributed at checkpoints.

Also at the checkpoints: activities like lectures, yoga classes, book presentations. Non-competitive event Highland was founded in Croatia in 2017 by three friends interested in long-distance hiking. Highland has since spread to 15 countries, including Morocco, Slovenia and the United Arab Emirates. Big Bear Lake is the first location in the United States to host the event.
