The state’s first non-tribal marijuana dispensary will open next week in Hartford.
Unity Road plans to open on July 27. This is Colorado-based 9 Labs Corp. BJ Olson and Adam Jorgensen, lifelong friends who both have careers in the wireless industry, brought the franchise to South Dakota. They have started working with Unity Red. As a consultant and the state reviews the Unity Red franchise registration application, you become a franchisee.

“The only reason we’re in this unique and special place is because we’ve made the choice to move forward,” Jorgensen said. “We’ve been into a building before we’ve bought a property and held a piece of paper and laid it on the table and rolled the dice.”
The 2,500-square-foot substation is located at 404 W. Opal Lane in Hartford, near Interstate 90’s Exit 387.
Olsen and his wife, Mindy, live in Hartford, and the partners decided to open there before Sioux Falls was awarded the license.
“In Hartford, we’re off the interstate, we’re the first city in the west, we’re a great community and a growing community … and we can be a part of that expansion,” Olson said.
They originally planned to offer medical and recreational marijuana, but had to change models when the legalization measure was found to be invalid. South Dakota will now vote again in November, meaning 2023 would be the fastest path to unification. May be sold for recreational use.
Until then, only those with a South Dakota-issued medical cannabis license can purchase from Unity Red. That means no tribal license or license from another state will be accepted.
“I think the biggest opportunity is to educate the public about who is allowed and who is not,” Olson says. One of our concerns is that the first week we are open we will turn away many people who have waited so long for relief.
Once approved by a registered physician — of which there are about 100 in the state — a patient can benefit from medical cannabis, he said, a two-week process to obtain a license.
Those doctors aren’t officially listed anywhere, “so you have to find them yourself,” he continued.
Unity Rad will start by offering marijuana flower right away and then add items like accessories over the next few weeks.
“Something that one shouldn’t smoke or cook,” Olson said.
The place is filled with 11 teams including the local owners.
“You see our faces on the floor because we’re owner-operators,” Jorgensen said. “What’s really shocking is the number of people who say, ‘This is my dream job.’ I’ve been waiting for this for years. This is the industry I want to work in.’ There is deep trust in the product. “
Because of the backlog of inventory and the relatively small number of potential customers — as of Monday, there were only 1,545 licensed patients in the state — opening hours will be short. Unity Rd is open Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 8pm.
“We want to be at the forefront of this industry,” Olson said. “We want to raise the bar extremely high. We want to be a leader across the country.
