It’s been a long two years for Upstate New Yorkers who have friends, family and property in Canada, as many have been unable to cross the border due to the Canadian government’s COVID travel restrictions.
With Upstate New York’s close proximity to Canada, many are frustrated by not being able to insure their loved ones or property. My family owns property in Canada and we last set foot in the country in 2011. It was the end of February 2020. Two weeks into our trip, the border closed. Once the border opened, it came with many travel restrictions and requirements thanks to the disease.
Now, as Canada is lifting its travel restrictions, my family, along with thousands of other New York families with property and loved ones in Canada, can cross the border without vaccinations, covid tests, isolation periods and more.
Starting this Saturday, October 1, visitors traveling by air, train or ship will no longer need to show proof of vaccination or be screened. In addition, travelers are not required to submit health information through Canada’s ArriveCan app.
There’s more – travelers are also not required to wear masks on trains or planes. Cruise passengers do not need to provide proof of vaccination or test negative for Covid-19 before being allowed to board.
Canada’s lifting of travel restrictions comes on the heels of other countries, including Japan, lifting their restrictions and beginning to allow free travel on Tuesday, October 11. In June of this year, the United States dropped its pre-arrival test laws. However, the U.S. still requires international travel to produce documentation proving that it is fully vaccinated.
