CAJON PASS, CA (VVNG.com) – A thick layer of fog blanketed Kaion Pass Friday, causing low visibility that was expected to last through Saturday night, with high winds.
A high wind watch is in effect Saturday morning through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency says areas of the Victor Valley will experience south to southwest winds of 25-35 mph with 50-60 mph winds.
Wind gusts of up to 75 mph are possible in the desert slopes and desert highlands of San Bernardino County’s mountains, including the Apple and Lucerne valleys.
“The strongest winds are expected near the desert slopes, but mountain wave activity could cause strong winds to blow onto the desert floor,” the forecaster said, “causing damaging winds that could down trees and power lines.”
The advisory warned that travel could be particularly difficult for high-speed vehicles as rain and fog, in addition to wind, pose a risk to New Year’s travel.
Snow is expected at higher elevations above 7,000 feet, but will fall to lower elevations after midnight, possibly covering roads above 6,000 feet.
Caltrans also issued a notice of emergency road closures due to rain and flooding from 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 31 through 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 1.
The following closures will be in place in the construction zone on the 15 Freeway with dates and times subject to change due to weather conditions.
The northbound and southbound Interstate 15 Freeway, Route 1, will be closed from Oak Hill Road to Bear Valley Road.
Caltrans advises commuters to avoid delays by detouring from State Route 138 to State Route 18 in Phelan and back to Interstate 15.
“Please use caution and remember to slow down when approaching and driving through a construction zone,” Caltrans reminded.
