Business so far this summer has been brisk in downtown Bath and foot traffic has been excellent, retailers say, though nowhere near as much as last summer, which they say was unbeatable.

“The world has changed and it’s not as busy as it was last year,” said Heidi Neal, owner of Loyal Biscuit Company, a pet supply store. Still, she’s happy with how busy this tourist season is.

Loyal Biscuit Company moved to a downtown Bath location in 2020, so Nell hasn’t experienced summer yet without the plague hovering outside her door.

Neal, along with several other local business owners, anticipates a drop in visitors from last year because people were eager to return to public spaces for the first time last summer.

“Last winter was crazy, but this winter was still good,” said Betty Spattle, owner of Over the Moon underwear store. I have no complaints.”

People who choose to travel this winter may no longer feel the need to stay home or even in the country, which is why Maine will see fewer tourists than in 2021.

Messages left for Corey King, executive director of the South Midcoast Maine Chamber, were not returned by the time frame for a forecast of how bass businesses have fared over the past several years.

Business at Lisa-Marie Made in Maine has been good, but down from last summer, Andy Stewart said.

“I think people are here, but they’ve spent a lot of food to get here, hotels and retail,” said gift shop owner Lisa-Marie Stewart. Sales are slightly behind 2019, he said, but not significantly.

Bath Brewing Company has not been as busy as expected this summer, even during Heritage Days last month, which is usually one of its busiest times, said employee Zach Seitman. Brewing has not yet returned to what it was before the outbreak, he said.

They were climbers who saw their business increase this summer.

Eliza Whisenand, an employee at Bruno’s Pizzeria, reports that sales have doubled since last summer. She said it’s early to see Bruno on a slow day, which sees tourists from all over the world.

Business has improved every year since the Main Street design company’s home decor store opened in 2019, and this year is actually “better” than last year, said visual merchandiser Jim McBride.

Most businesses say August is their busiest month, so they’re booking to pick up customers in the coming weeks.
