Business Council calls on Harrison County regulators to reappoint tourism board president

BiloXI, Miss. (WLOX) – The Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce is appealing to Harrison County leaders about the future of coastal Mississippi.

Prior to the July 5 meeting, the council sent a letter to the Harrison County Supervisors Board, which will discuss the Mississippi Coastal Tourism Commission.

“During the years leading up to the creation of the Regional Tourism Commission, we have seen the dismissal of many members of the commission’s board and its staff. It was within the agency,” the letter read.

Following the letter from the Business Council, he will continue to ask the Board of Supervisors to appoint Brooke Scholet as President of the Tourism Commission.

“We also believe that Brooke understands the need for continued regional stability, as evidenced by her efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in collaboration with the leaders of Hancock and Jackson County.”

The Tourism Board became embroiled in controversy last year following the sudden departure of former CEO Milton Cigar. Domino’s resignation came after Hankok County Commissioner Mark Henderson and Jackson County Commissioners Carla Todd and Clay Wagner all resigned in the next few days. (It should be noted that Wagner’s resignation was related to his decision to run for public office.)

During a recent board meeting between Connie Rockco, Rebecca Powers and Marilyn Ladner, four more Mississippi beach workers resigned. At that meeting, Rococo Schultz said she would not be back until July 1, when her term was due to end, but Powers said she had been told differently by Schultz.

The three-county commission currently has nine Harrison County councilors and three each from the Jackson and Hancock counties. Several Harrison County supervisors told WLOX News that they felt the Harrison County Tourism Board should remain in the driver’s seat outside of the camera.

The appointment of the Tourism Commission is likely to be discussed at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors on July 5.

Thomas Sherman, a resident of Biloxi, was appointed by the board to replace Schultz, but he was not appointed president of the board. The commissioners are responsible for voting for the new leader.
