Cher Harpster, Penn State Extension educator and chair of the Juniata River Valley Business and Education Committee, will discuss Free-Wheeling Day at a committee meeting on Thursday.

LEWISTON – The Juniata River Valley Business and Education Committee met Thursday at the Penn State Extension office in Lewistown.

The Committee heard updates on various Council activities including Free Wheel Day and Academy Signing Day. The Free-Wheeling Day features local businesses and agencies offering work experience to local 4th graders. This year’s event is scheduled for May 24 at Reedsville Youth Park.

“Free Wheel Day is an opportunity for elementary students to experience a career in the real world and meet someone who represents the profession.” Penn State Extension Educator and Business and Education Committee Chair Cher Harper said.

Academy Signing Day at the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology is scheduled for May 17. The event is similar to an athlete’s signing day with a college or university. The day gives students an opportunity to sign with employers.

The committee received updates on two college and career fairs scheduled for October, each in Mifflin and Juniata counties. Exact dates have yet to be determined.

The academy informed the committee that there has been an increase in enrollment and interview process which will benefit the students. A teaching academy is being added as part of the early childhood program, and supervisor training will begin this summer in partnership with local businesses.

Improvements were made by Mifflin County School District departments at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels.
