Burberry, Zalando and British Fashion Council team up on Diversity Initiative

Dubbed “The Outsider’s View,” the program seeks to address the underrepresentation of minorities in the fashion industry.

Created by former Roxanda CEO and BFC Executive Board member Jamie Gill, the initiative offers mentoring opportunities for people of color looking to break into the fashion industry in areas such as sales, merchandising, operations, marketing and legal.

The program has a total of six funders, including the Mayor of London office, Deloitte and Carla Otto.

Participants will also benefit from networking sessions with minority industry leaders, including “chief marketing officers and merchandising experts from British fashion brands”, who will conduct structured workshops to introduce candidates to the industry’s key business functions, Gill told BoF.

“Apart from the importance of representation, an outsider’s perspective aligns with the real business need in fashion,” said Gill. “A lot of companies tell me they want to hire diverse talent, they just don’t know how to do it yet.”
