Braving the waves for a holiday trip? Here’s what to pack in addition to gifts

Minneapolis – If you have to travel in this winter storm, bring some essentials with you that could save your life.

Jordan Frey works as a firefighter for Summit, braving the streets all day and night to help people with frozen pipes — hoping they don’t all get stuck on the side of the road.

“We’ve got jackets, extra sweaters, gloves, just in case something happens, and hopefully we’re prepared for the worst,” Frey said.

According to AAA, more than 100 million Americans are driving to their holiday destinations this year. And with the forecast, state officials are urging everyone who has to travel in dangerous weather to be prepared with an emergency vehicle kit.

Kevin Reed is the deputy director of the Minnesota Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.

“I like to look at three things: What do I need if I get stuck? What do I need to communicate with people? And third, what if I have to stay there a little longer? How can I support myself? Both snacks, water, extra gloves to keep warm, extra blankets, things like that,” Reed said. .

That kit should also include flares, tow ropes, flashlights, jumper cables, and even a shovel or snowblower.

In the worst-case scenario, the Minnesota Emergency Management Agency says they have a plan if too many people get stuck.

“How do we help get these stranded drivers off the highway by tracking the State Patrol and other vehicles from the National Guard,” he said.

It’s a good idea to keep your emergency kit in a place where you can access it in case of a breakdown, rather than in your trunk.
