NEW YORK – Home is where Brandon Maxwell’s heart is and his spring/summer collection at New York Fashion Week featured his use of purple, his mother’s favorite color.

Tuesday’s show opened at Christie’s Rockefeller Plaza in New York with a moody blue light and the sound of chirping birds before dawn. The light in the atmosphere gradually turned into an airy lilac, evoking the sunrise in the countryside.

Maxwell focused on the theme of soft feminine beauty, opting for pastels, layers and relaxed proportions. He mixes neutrals with pastels like baby blue, sage green and blush pink in his everyday wardrobe for women. The show opened with a bold pink layered look: a silver mini dress with a classic white graphic T-shirt, a shimmery cardigan and a pink blazer with structured shoulders.

Maxwell, a native of Texas, said his inspiration for the collection came from moving out of New York City.

“So[the collection]is inspired by the people who raised me, because I think a lot of what goes into this collection is like involuntary memories that were triggered in my time, and it quietly took me back outside of the city. My youth and the things I loved,” Maxwell said.

He said that was reflected in the clothes and the late ’90s, early 2000s vibe. “I think that’s when I really fell in love with fashion and yes, my family is always there,” he said.

Maxwell’s nostalgia was reflected in a denim jumpsuit with a matching black sequin top embroidered with yellow sunflowers and a plunging V-neck. Other looks include a strapless strapless top paired with wide thong pants layered under a white cotton tank top. The most popular ’90s-inspired look was a full-length tulle dress layered over a white graphic tank.

The show closed with another delicately layered look, a silver dress that looked like a Monet painting paired with a white T-shirt, pink blazer and sizzling platform heels.

Sitting in the front row were Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, TV personality La La Anthony, supermodel Karlie Kloss and singer Kelsey Ballerini.

“(Maxwell) just embraced it. He’s versatile, he fits all body types (like) curves that I like. He’s just got it,” Anthony said.
