Between the war, travel vacation in Ukraine

[ad_1]

Ukraine’s Independence Day marks the day Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. However, the holiday has taken on a new meaning this year as Ukraine has been at war with Russia for six months. And even in the thick of the war, Ukrainians are finding peace and rest in travel.

Travel vacation in Ukraine between the wars

Many have the misconception that war means total war, as if it is being fought in every street and corner. This has never happened in Ukraine or in any other conflict in the last hundred years. Indeed, life continues as normal in most of Ukraine, although the existential threat of a massive invading force is sometimes miles away.

As Ukrainians reflect on Independence Day and the atmosphere of war, some soldiers are taking a well-deserved break… and they don’t even have to go far. Michael Schweitz of the New York Times recently wrote a delightful story about how Tylyhull Estuary has become a favorite retreat for weary Ukrainian families.

The Tillyhull Estuary is less than 50 miles from the front line, but a completely different world, a world of quiet waves, soft sand and oysters. It is one of the few places on the Black Sea coast without mining and has become a popular holiday destination.

Oyster is a special picture. At the beginning of the war, Ukrainian troops prevented Russian advances that threatened to take control of this area, including Andrey Pigulevsky’s oyster farm. In gratitude, Pigulevsky allows all soldiers and their families to enjoy unlimited oysters at no cost. He told Schwartz:

“The purpose of this place is to relax for a few hours to feel like it’s a time of peace.”

Human resilience is an amazing story. Trees are still being cut down, windows are still being washed, and coffee shops are still serving espresso all over Ukraine, even in areas under constant threat of Russian bombing. But the battle begins. Soldiers who enjoy a few hours on the beach must return to their home ranges and face dangers that most of us can’t even imagine.

Summary

Even in war, people still need travel… we need rest… we need rest. On this Independence Day of Ukraine, I pray that the conflict will be turned into victory and that Putin will be further humiliated and finally defeated for his unjustified and reckless invasion of a sovereign nation.
