Bears travel to face ducks, tigers

Berkeley – The No. 37 California women’s tennis team (7-7, 4-2 Pac-12) heads north to play No. 43 Oregon (11-5, 4-2) Sunday at 11 a.m. PDT followed by non-conference play. at Pacific (6-6) Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Stockton, Calif.

The contest against Pacific was recently added to the schedule, after Cal’s matchup at No. 4 Pepperdine — originally scheduled for Friday — was canceled. The home-and-away series between the Golden Bears and Waves continues in 2024.

Polling place

Cal improved five points to 37 in the ITA team poll this week. In this week’s ITA singles poll, Jessica Ella – 14 game winning streak – ranked 43rd. Alsola and Katja Wiersholm (16-9) jumped 11 points to No. 4 in the doubles rankings.

Bears take two of three at home

In recent action, Cal has won two of three matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex, beating Pac-12 Conference rivals Arizona State and Arizona, then falling to Loyola Marymount Conference.

On March 31 No. 26 ASU Hannah Villers Moller Rachel defeated Hanford 6-2, 6-2 for her fourth Cal win and doubles win. Katja Wiersholm And Jessica Ella The Bears topped 18th-ranked Patricia Spaka and Domenica Turkovic 6-2 to top the doubles point.

On April 1 Valentina Ivanova In Cal’s 7-0 win over the 44th-ranked Wildcats, Lexi Wringler earned her first win of the season, 6-2, 6-3. In addition, Cal Erin Richardson And Bertha Pasola Folch Midori Castillo Meza and Belen Nevenhoven won 6-3 to secure the doubles point.

In a 4-3 loss at LMU on April 2, 62, Cal Jessica Ella She recorded her 14th straight win with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Lions’ Stefania Rogozinka-Dzik.

Scouting bears

• With a 4-2 conference record, Cal is in a three-way tie for third place in the Pac-12 standings with Oregon and USC.
• Cal — which went 8-1 in the conference in the 2021-22 season — is the Pac-12 regular-season champion.

• Associate head coach Zach Warren He is the 2022 ITA Northwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year – in his ninth year on staff – collecting four regional awards overall.
• After playing for the Cal men’s tennis team as a graduate student in 2022, Sean Hill is in his first year as Cal’s volunteer assistant coach.

Scouting the ducks

• Before Sunday’s Cal-Oregon tilt, the Ducks host Stanford on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
• Oregon swept its previous two games — a 5-2 win over Washington State on March 31 and a 4-0 win over No. 18 Washington on April 2.
• The Ducks have scored in double figures in each of their 11 total wins this season
• Courtney Nagle is in her fifth season as Oregon’s head coach.

Scouting tigers

• Before hosting Cal on Tuesday, Pacific hosts Cal Poly on Friday at 1 p.m. and plays at St. Mary’s on Saturday at 11 a.m.
• Prior to their Cal Poly matchup, the Tigers had lost two straight at home – 4-0 at Pepperdine on March 31 and 4-0 at LMU on April 1.
• The team of Clara Kosan and Karina Chao – the current WCC Doubles Team of the Week – was ranked 32nd in the latest ITA poll.
• Mike Erwin is in his fifth season as Pacific’s head coach.
