Ashley Ryan, 28, Barton, was arrested and charged in Rugby District Court with theft of property, impersonation or impersonation, both class A felonies, and unauthorized use of personal identification information, a class B felony.
According to an affidavit submitted to the court, agents of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation received a report from the owner of a rugby business that his bookkeeper, Ashley Ryan, was stealing from the business. The owner’s affidavit confirmed that Ryan had written and deposited checks worth more than $10,000 to herself. The owner told investigators that Ryan used a signature stamp to endorse the checks to herself and entered false notes in accounting documents, labeling the cash disbursements as refunds or reimbursements. Based on the owner’s review of all transactions and bank records, the total amount is estimated to be approximately $121,581.48.
Ryan was interviewed by BCI on April 2 after returning from a trip to Florida. After she was Mirandized, Ryan allegedly confessed to stealing the money and the method by which she did it. She revealed in an interview that she only had $3,000 of the $121,581.48 after paying part of the money and using it to fund her Florida vacation with other luxuries. According to the affidavit, Ryan told investigators she began stealing the money in July 2022 to cover expenses for medical bills. Ryan said it became easier after that and she couldn’t stop because she was happy and wanted quality of life and financial stability.
Appearing before District Court Judge Michael Hooley, Ryan was granted a pretrial release on a $120,000 cash bond. Ryan is required to remain within the state of North Dakota and must not break any laws. She is also required to have no relationship with the business or the business owner.
A date for Ryan’s next hearings has not been set.
