At the inaugural partner conference in Shanghai, autonomous-centric robotic car brand JIDU shared their ambitious overseas product expansion goals. In addition, the CEO of parent company Baidu said that JIDU’s autonomous driving technology will “lead the next generation of Tesla.”
In the year In January 2021, Baidu announced that it is expanding from software development to physical EV production, joining forces with Geely to produce a new range of EVs. In March, the JIDU brand went public on the heels of $300 million in startup capital. That amount was followed by another $400 million in Series A funding in January 2022, led by Baidu.
JIDU’s market strategy is based on the ROBO-01 concept, focusing on introducing autonomous driving and human-machine interaction technologies from mainstream EVs.
Since first teasing the ROBO-01, JIDU has quickly become a household name for fully-autonomous EVs that combine interactive robotic senses with artificial intelligence in the driving experience. We got our first full look at the ROBO-01 at the JIDU ROBOCAR Day in June, which features a retractable yoke steering wheel powered by JIDU’s steer-by-wire technology that folds into an autonomous driving mode.
According to JIDU, the ROBO-01 autonomous driving system uses two NVIDIA Orion X chips and is equipped with thirty-one external sensors, including two lidars, a five millimeter wave radar, twelve ultrasonic radars and twelve cameras.
At his latest public event in China earlier today, JIDU’s CEO shared some bold product goals for the decade and was joined by the CEOs of both JIDU’s parents — Baidu and Geely — one of whom directly called out Tesla’s autonomous driving capabilities.
JIDU Tesla wants 800k autonomous robocars by 2028
The main focus of JIDU’s partner conference in China today was to share news of its “2880” strategy, which includes its ambition to deliver 800,000 robotic EVs annually by 2028.
The CEO shared that JIDU plans to officially launch a limited production model version of the ROBO-01, which is 90% similar to the concept. Mass production of JIDU’s first EV will go up in 2023.
Baidu CEO Robin Li spoke at the event, explaining how JIDU will inherit Baidu’s AI technology and autonomous driving technology from Apollo and take it to a new level. Lee explained.

Lee said JIDU is expected to lead Tesla by a generation when it comes to autonomous driving technology. Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) continues to progress in beta, but its originally promised delivery date is still years behind schedule. The entire release is continuously designed to give the American automaker more time.
Like JIDU and most other EVs developing self-driving technologies, Tesla decided long ago to use LiDAR.
A production demand version of the ROBO-01 concept is expected to be unveiled soon, followed by a public first look at the exterior design of JIDU’s second “Robocar” model at the Guangzhou Auto Show in late 2022.
