Arizona State University announced Monday that the Institute of Fashion Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles will be part of the expansion of fashion education at the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts at ASU.
ASU’s fashion program, incorporating both the FIDM community and campus, is named ASU FIDM and operates in both Los Angeles and Phoenix.
FIDM will continue to operate as a separate academic institution from ASU with a greater focus on business-related academic programs in the creative industries.
“Leveraging FIDM and ASU’s expertise and creativity around the fashion and creative industries will create significantly enhanced opportunities for students,” said Steven Tepper, dean and director of the Herberger Institute of Design and Arts at ASU. “Giving aspiring creative professionals the opportunity to study at a global research university gives them the opportunity to choose and contribute to a fast-growing industry. I am confident that ASU FIDM can lead the world in educating the future of an inclusive, sustainable and socially responsible fashion industry.”
ASU has begun working with FIDM students to share the ASU degree offerings available as a result of the expansion. The FIDM Fashion and Design Program advises students on opportunities to complete their programs at FIDM or continue at ASU.

Our culture of excellence and inspiration will continue to grow as part of Arizona State University, with access to world-class facilities, faculty and programs to ensure students are prepared for a highly demanding, increasingly competitive and ever-evolving industry.
Additionally, ASU FIDM students continue to use FIDM in relationships with leading companies and brands. ASU’s expansion will allow students to benefit from the FIDM Museum and other assets.
In recent years, ASU students have received a wide range of offerings in LA as the university has made its home in Southern California at the ASU California Center in the Herald Examiner Building. The university’s presence includes the Cronkite News Los Angeles office, where digital and broadcast students create news and sports content. Educating the next generation of diverse filmmakers and storytellers, Sidney Poitier New American Film School and Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law offer students the opportunity to take classes while exploring experiential-learning offerings and networking opportunities in LA.
ASU has more than 62,000 alumni living in California and 20,000 California residents as degree-seeking students, and 13 percent of its graduates work in California.
ASU’s fashion program launched in 2017 and offers courses including a BA in Fashion in Patternmaking, Digital Patternmaking, Technical Design, Apparel Construction, Merchandising, Supply Chain Management, Retail Management and Branding.
In the year In the spring of 2023, ASU has more than 500 students in fashion, majoring or minoring in fashion, and hundreds more taking individual classes. ASU’s fashion program offers studio spaces and recording studios, digital media labs, performance spaces, and an interdisciplinary makerspace with laser cutters, 3D printers, semi and industrial knitting machines.
FIDM was founded in Founded in 1969 by Tony Hohberg, CEO and President, and offers fashion design and business degree programs. FIDM partners and in-class collaborators include brands such as Disney, Nike, Netflix, PacSun, Levi’s and Converse.
ASU’s Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts Created in 2009 out of two existing academic departments, Catherine K. Herberger College of Art and Design – is the largest comprehensive school of design and art in the country, art schools; Arts, Media and Engineering; music, dance and theater; School of Design: Sidney Poitier New School of American Film and the ASU Museum of Art.
