Of the major tech giants, Apple collects the least personal user data from its users, while the iPhone maker uses Google, Twitter, Amazon and Facebook to collect more data from its users, a new analysis has found.
The survey measured how many data points each company collects from its users. The study confirmed that Google took the top spot by collecting a total of 39 data points for each user. Twitter and Amazon follow, collecting 24 and 23 data points for each user.
It may come as a surprise to some, Facebook, which is known to support user tracking, is close to Apple by collecting only 14 data points for each user. Apple is at the bottom of the list, collecting only 12 data points for each user, according to the study. Unlike Google, Apple relies heavily on on-device machine learning and algorithms to determine personalized features such as personalized Apple Music recommendations and photos in photos.
While Apple collects the least user data from its users, other companies like Google and Facebook are making it harder to collect data from iPhone users. In the year In 2020, Apple will introduce App Tracking Transparency (ATT), which will give users a choice about whether they want to be tracked on apps and websites owned by other companies. Facebook has insisted on ATT, and details last year confirmed that the rapid turnaround could cost social media companies $10 billion in revenue by 2021.
