NEW YORK (AP) – Angelina Jolie announced a new fashion venture Wednesday to allow customers to engage with top dressmakers, patternmakers and artisans from around the world in making their own creations.
The actress, director and former UN refugee agency special envoy said on Instagram and on the new Atelier Jolie website that the project will use dry fabrics and vintage materials.
“We hope to create a community of creativity and inspiration regardless of social and economic background,” Jolie posted on the brand’s site. “We focus on the people who play a role in each creation.
The project “hopes to share the richness of their cultural heritage and to help support the development of their own businesses,” wrote Jolie. Customers can also repair or clean up pieces from their closets as a way to get rid of clutter.
“We can all collect, admire and be influenced by the designs of others. But the highest form of self-expression – and I believe the most fun – is creating for ourselves,” she said.
The idea came from Jolly’s “deep admiration and respect for the many tailors and manufacturers I’ve worked with over the years, their desire to use the highest quality vintage materials and fabrics available today, and to be part of a movement to develop more self-expression.”
No further details have been released. When Jolie stepped down as UN special envoy in December, she felt it was time to “do things differently” by dealing directly with refugees and local organizations.
Jolie’s fashion choice creates a lot of interest in the media. She and her children are often photographed and their styles are scattered. Her two children, Selo and Zahara, wore pieces from their mother’s archive to the premiere of her 2021 film, “Eternal.”
