Nick Chester, the former Lotus and Renault Formula 1 technical director, has been appointed if the American team’s plan to join General Motors brand Cadillac in 2026 is successful.
Racing can reveal Andretti will join him this month after Chester quit working with the McLaren Formula E team formed by the championship-winning Mercedes EQ operation, which has taken a four-driver and team title in the past two Formula E seasons. In February.
Chester’s position at McLaren, who joined the Formula E team in January, has been taken over by former Ferrari F1 engineer Chris Dyer.
Although Chester’s former boss at McLaren, Ian James, confirmed to Race last month that Chester had left the team, James would not say where Chester is currently working.
But Chester Andretti is understood to have begun setting up a technical and engineering team to work initially from Andretti’s UK headquarters in Banbury, with the aim of starting in 2026 if Cadillac were to enter.
“He had a lot of experience, and that goes for Chris as well,” James said.
I think that’s one thing in the role, it’s absolutely critical. Nick was also a very calming influence on the team.
“Overall, I think he has a good approach to take on some fairly meaty challenges, but at the same time, don’t let that shape or mold the team in any way. And he is good at bringing everyone with him on that journey.
“So when he was with us he was a real asset and I enjoyed working with him.”
Andretti was the first responsible for outlining plans for an F1 bid when the FIA announced it would open the entry process in January.
But the group It has tried to buy Sauber in 2021 and has regularly made clear its desire to join F1 – although it has been linked with Cadillac for its formal bid, but still faces strong opposition from existing teams.
