There is a folding service for wash-flat seats in business class.
Our flight was a red eye. We left Los Angeles in the evening and were scheduled to land in Oakland in the morning.
After dinner was cleared, passengers slowly retreated to the bathroom to freshen up before bed. I headed to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. When I finished, the flight attendant turned my seat into a bed.
One of the main benefits of business class on Air New Zealand’s long-haul flights is that the seats convert to bunk beds.
During the turndown service, the flight attendant presses a few buttons, which turns the upright seat into a horizontal bed. Then, add the mattress pad, as well as the blanket and pillow. Finally, remove the seat belts for safety and check with each passenger to see if they need any last drinks, snacks or supplies before dimming the cabin lights.
I thought the transition from dinner to sleep was effortless for passengers. I know that with my eye mask on, I’m more likely to fall asleep. I don’t have that confidence when I sit up straight on a plane in economy.
And sure enough, I slept in a comfortable bed for five hours. I woke up to the smell of hot coffee and breakfast.
I went back to the bathroom before eating. When I left, my bed turned into a seat. It felt like magic, even though I knew it was the result of diligent flight attendants.
