AMARILLO, TX – Trailing by four after the third inning, the Sod Puddles continued their comeback in the late stages of the game Friday night. The 10-7 victory clinched the series against the St. Louis Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate of the Springfield Cardinals in Central Amarillo.
It was a strange start to the game for Sodius starter Ross Carver. The right-hander gave up a single for the first hit of the night. One of the robberies was presented on foot the first night. However, after facing the bottom, Carver and the Sodds got out of the game with the help of a line-out double play by Drew Stankiewicz at second base.
The bottom of the first inning was kept alive by an error by the Cardinals third baseman. Eduardo Diaz doubled Leandro Cedeno while both were on the scoresheet for Blaze Alexander. Blaze easily scored Cedeno and Eduardo Diaz was thrown out to make it 2-0.
Springfield’s Jordan Walker led off the second inning with a single and was forced to ground out. Amarillo’s first error of the night, a double over the left field wall in the second inning, allowed Diaz to throw out a runner on the field, allowing the runner to come from first. Amarillo sent the Baby Redbirds back to the plate in the third, going down in order in the bottom half.
The leadoff play gave Springfield its first lead of the night. A three-run double, including a three-run home run, extended the Cardinals’ lead to 4-1. Drew Stankiewicz’s leadoff run in the third was futile as his next three batters were hit outs. Even after a Sod Puddles pitching change, the game remained a three-run deficit in the fifth inning. Kenny Hernandez took over and went on to strike out two in the 5th in a 1-2-3 inning.
The home half of the fifth inning began with a double by Tyquan Forbes, who later advanced to third on a balk. Beating two, George Barossa doubled up on Forbes and sent Andy Yerzy from first to third. In the third of the game, the Sod Puddles scored Amarillo’s third run of the night on an opposite field single by Robbie Enriquez. Cedeno’s sac fly made it a 5-4 game.
Sod Puddles errors in the 6th helped extend the Cardinals’ lead, making it a three-run game going into the seventh. Jake Rice threw a one-hit shutout for Amarillo in the seventh inning to keep the Cardinals at bay.
Following a pitching change and two quick outs, an 11-pitch at-bat for Barrosa ended with a walk to keep the Sodies at the plate. Back-to-back singles from Enriquez and Cedeno put Barossa in scoring position and brought life to the 6,000-plus crowd. It was his fourth-straight to reach base when Diaz drew a two-out walk. A two-RBI single by Alexander tied things up for the first time since Springfield posted one in the second inning. With the train moving, Nick Dalessandro hit a single up the middle to score Diaz and give the Sodies their second lead of the game.
Left-hander Andrew Saalfrank took over for Rice in the 8th and pitched a perfect inning with a pair of strikeouts. Combined long balls from the bats of Yerzy and Barossa added some cushion for Amarillo and Blake Rogers got the heat out of the Amarillo bullpen.
He allowed one hit in his 10th save of the season in a scoreless ninth inning in 12 innings.
The Sod Poodles snapped a two-game winning streak against the Cardinals. The series continues Saturday for Wizard World Night at the Ballpark. RHP Denny Olivero (1-8, 6.29) is slated to battle righty Gordon Grassefo (5-3, 4.26). The first pitch from Hodgewartz is set for 7:05pm, with doors opening at 6.

Back, Blonde and Flame: SS Blaise Alexander stuck to the plate for Amarillo in big moments. The D-backs’ No. 21 rated prospect finished the game 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Sod Puddle was the player of the game. His RBI single in the top of the first put the first run of the night on the board. His two-out, two-RBI single in the 7th tied the game for Amarillo, who had erased a four-run deficit in the third inning. In his 17th multi-hit game, Blaze has raised his AVG to .299 on the year with 10 home runs, 10 doubles, a triple and now 29 RBI. In three games since returning from the IL, Alexander is 4-for-12 (.333). Friday It is the fourth 3 game losing streak so far in 2022.
Rogers That: Right-hander Blake Rogers recorded his 10th save of the year after the ninth inning. The Louisville, TX native and University of Oklahoma product has converted 10-of-11 save opportunities this season and carries a 3.61 ERA in 36 games for Double-A Amarillo. Rodgers was signed by the Diamondbacks last offseason and has more saves than anyone else in the Diamondbacks organization.
It should be Rice: Jake Rice gets his first Double-A win after a three-run seventh inning by the Sod Puddles. He became the first D-backs’ 2021 draft pick to advance to Double-A since last year’s ninth-round pick of the Diamondbacks out of Hillsboro in late May. Since joining Amarillo, Rice is now 1-0 with a 12.12 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
The Turning Point: In the bottom of the 7th inning and down by three runs, George Barossa had his best at-bat of the night. Facing a 3-2 count, the Sodius center fielder struck out four straight pitches before eventually drawing a walk after his 11th at-bat. The walk kept the inning alive and sparked the offense. Barossa’s first of six straight as Amarillo used a four-run inning to take the lead for good. Barossa would later put an arrow on the Sod Puddles’ victory, for the 11th time this year in the eighth round. His solo home run scored the night.
Yrzelf was back in full swing: After a strong top of the sixth inning that included two errors and two Springfield runs, Andy Yrzel pitched in the 8th. The Canadian crusher hit his 10th home run of the season, then gave Amarillo some breathing room for a two-run lead. After hitting a home run in last night’s game, Friday’s early fireworks hit the streak for the third time this season. Yrzy was tied for third in the org with 21 home runs last year. In the year He has hit 59 homers in his minor league career, which began in 2016.
