Generative AI is hot among venture capital firms right now, with $4.5 billion in investment by 2022. Narato, an AI content creation and collaboration platform, today announced that it has joined the ranks of other creative AI startups with VC funding. San Francisco-based Narato has raised $1 million in a pre-seed round led by Airtree Ventures, an Australian firm that is an early investor in Kava, Linktree and Recruitment Hero.

Other participants in the round include OfBusiness, a B2B e-commerce platform, and serial entrepreneur Shreesha Ramdas. Narato is used by clients including payments SaaS startup ChargeBee, language learning app Preply and customer onboarding software Rocketlane. It will work with Airtree to expand across the United States.

DrumUp was a content marketing and social media management SaaS platform founded in January 2022 by Australian Sophia Solanki.

Solanki told TechCrunch that the Narato team’s initial idea was to build a “GitHub for content” that would offer marketing teams automation, collaboration and publishing, among other features. But they’ve also been tracking generative AI over the past couple of years and say it’s “a very powerful tool for creating content with its current state of maturity.” The Narato team decided to embed generative AI into various stages of content processing.

Narato’s main feature is an AI content assistant that helps with planning, including automatic brief generation, content creation and optimization. It also has collaboration and workflow tools and automatic publishing features. Solanki offers templates for both AI and non-AI content creation, including blogs, articles, web copy, emails, video scripts, social media content, and art. Narato also has AI-powered chat-like content creation, and plans to expand its selection of generative AI-powered content templates to hundreds.

Once briefs are created through generative AI, writers can use them for SEO guidelines and specifications. They also include research and benchmarks to help content creators reach a wider audience.

Solanki named several startups as Narato’s indirect and direct competitors. Notion, Clickup, and Airtable are used by content creators for content project management, while Jasper and Copy.ai are content creation platforms that use AI. How Narato wants to differentiate itself is by incorporating creative AI into the entire marketing and content creation workflow within a single platform.

“Having identified the vast opportunity for generative AI in content marketing and successfully built two companies in this space, Sophia knows the market inside out,” said Airtry partner Alicia MacDonald in a statement about the funding. She has a strong connection to the problem and it’s a remarkable achievement for a company at this early stage, especially considering how far they’ve come to date.
