If ever there was a time for vacation, it was the summer of 2022. After years of pandemic worries, Americans are ready to take to the skies in search of fun, sun and relaxation.
But according to a recent Forbes Consulting survey, many travelers hit some stressful situations along the way.
Travel delays and cancellations aren’t incredibly rare, but insufficient airlines, increased flight demand and severe storms have made air travel especially challenging this winter.

Of the 2,000 travelers, 61% experienced flight delays and/or cancellations—two events that quickly dampen the summer travel spirit. Among 61%, 83% lost money due to travel issues.

More than a third (39%) of travelers surveyed were lucky enough to keep their original itinerary intact. This was not the case for most respondents.
Flight delays and cancellations leave half (51%) of travelers stuck at the airport for some time waiting for a rescheduled or alternative flight.
Of these, 55 percent of stranded travelers were able to resume their journey in four hours or less. An unlucky 26% waited seven hours or more for their next flight, while 4% waited 16 hours or more.
Missed experiences and improved plans
Waiting for a new flight can be difficult, but for some travelers, the study comes at a cost: missed experiences and financial losses.
Here are the top summer travel problems with 61% of respondents experiencing flight delays or cancellations:
- 31% of travelers who experienced flight delays or cancellations missed a prepaid night at their resort or hotel.
- 19% missed a prepaid activity at their destination.
- An unlucky 17% had to cancel their trip entirely, incurring costs such as transportation, airport parking, dog boarding and unused hotel rooms.
- Another 17% missed out on important events like weddings, graduations and family reunions.
- A lucky 13% missed a cruise after their flight was canceled or delayed.
How much have travelers lost this summer due to airport accidents?
More than half of respondents (59%) lost $500 or less, and others weren’t so lucky:
- Nearly one in four travelers (24%) lost more than $500.
- 14% reported losing more than $1,000.
Travel insurance can ease the financial burden of delayed or canceled flights.
Hotel rooms, resorts and pre-paid activities are not always refundable, especially if you have to cancel at the last minute.

This online survey of 2,000 US adults who have flown since June 1, 2022 was commissioned by Forbes Consulting and conducted by market research firm Wanpol in accordance with the Marketing Research Association’s ethical guidelines.
Data collected August 3-9, 2022. The margin of error is +/- 2.2 points at 95% confidence.
