Microsoft-owned and operated search engine Bing has launched a new look around conversational chat technology powered by ChatGPT, the new Sense owned by OpenAI. At an event today, the CEOs of Microsoft and OpenAI gave a demo of the new Bing, and it will be open to everyone in the coming days. The revamped Bing offers a ChatGPT-powered chat box with descriptive AI answers to the right of traditional search results.
A conversational chatbot greatly simplifies how people search for travel plans on search engines, among other question types, as this example shows on the right, the question “I’m planning a trip in September for our year.” What are some places we can go within a 3 hour flight from London Heathrow?”
The difference between the current version of ChatGPT and this version of Bing is the annotations on the sources and suggestions for additional queries to add to the original.
Quick answers to questions like these have many implications for the travel industry, as we’ve been exploring in detail on Skift over the past couple of months.
Another interesting battle to watch: This conversation comes down to traditional online booking players (including OTAs and brands’ digital channels) and what does it do to the travel booking process?
