A pig that found its way to a local business trained in proper pig handling was returned to its owner.

The pig was captured by staff at Nalls Produce, a garden center in the Kingstown area, which turned the loose community pig over to the county’s animal control department.

In a statement on social media, Nals Produce wrote, “It’s amazing how one pig can be turned around in an environment with staff trained in proper pig handling and pig feeding.”

County Animal Control Police Second Lt. Kathleen Prucknall said the pig was returned to its owner after a community search.

Our officers occasionally encounter hogs in Fairfax County and when doing so, they prioritize public safety and animal welfare. Dispatch received several calls over the course of several days and attempted to locate and detain the animal each time it was reported, Prucknall wrote in a statement.

The Fairfax County Police Department advises anyone who encounters a loose pig to call the non-emergency dispatch number of 703-691-2131, although 911 should be used in the event of an emergency.

Nalls Produce describes the pig as a “young full-sized pig” and not a “mini” Penny, according to the business owner.
