Minneapolis (FOX 9) – With its signature horse in the window, Schatzlin’s Saddle Shop has been a favorite in South Minneapolis for over a century.
Now one of the oldest businesses on Lake Street is wishing its customers some fun.
“I’m overwhelmed by all the people who come to me and need my help. I do a lot of saddlery and help people with their horse problems,” Janet Schatzlin said.
Her grandfather Emil opened the shop in 1907 as a hardware store.
But business took off when he started selling saddles to outfit nearby riding academies in what is now Bede Maka Ska.

Years later, her father expanded into boots and cowboy hats, which continued to be the store’s best seller, but due to supply chain issues and the aging of the siblings working in the store, they decided to sell the building and close the store for good.
“I wanted to retire, and when the four of us work here, that will be three. Then my next brother wants to retire. Why not retire on a good note,” Schatzlin said.
Schatzlin said the store has developed a loyal following over its 115 years, and the news of the closing is a final farewell to customers.
“Everybody that comes out says they’ve been here since they were young and all the people who bought from us, and they’re sad to see us go, but they understand,” Schatzlin said.
Although Schatzlin is ready to ride off into the sunset, she is grateful that her family’s unbridled love of horses has taken its toll.
“We have some loyal customers and I really appreciate them. They’re going to be missed,” Schatzlin said.
