Advances in legal technology and regulatory innovation are explored in a new ABA report

The ABA Innovation Center released the best on Tuesday Innovation trends reportExplores developments in the legal services industry with a focus on internal ABA innovation, legal technology and regulatory innovation.
The report was written primarily by the center’s board members and, according to an ABA news release, “collectively highlights some of the most innovative and forward-thinking efforts in legal service delivery nationally.” It also includes a section on Rocket Lawyer’s experience in Utah’s regulatory sandbox program.
In an internal ABA innovation section, the report highlights the combination of police killings by deans of ABA-accredited law schools in 2020 and legal education policing of violence in predominantly black communities. As of July, 60 law schools are participating, the report said.
The report about A survey of model diversityConducted on ABA Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. For its 2021 edition, the study collected data from 287 law firms with more than 100,000 attorneys nationwide. It is the second ABA report on diversity, equity, and inclusion in law firm practice.

Based on developments in legal technology, the report’s authors explain the concept behind application programming interfaces and legal platforms and why they are important to the legal industry. In other articles, they discuss the metaverse and its legal implications and the use and efficiency of technology.
“An explosive area for growth will be with analytics, such as predicting what a judge is likely to decide in a case by looking at how she has decided in the past and applying algorithms to determine the outcome if the same case is brought before her,” the report on the use of artificial intelligence in the legal industry by other authors. Rocket Lawyer announced in September 2020 that it was one of the first entities approved to participate in Utah’s regulatory sandbox program, which allows informal legal service providers to operate in the state, including those with non-lawyer investors, for fear of being accused of unauthorized legal practice.
In the report, Rocket Lawyer said he has helped thousands of legal cases, mostly for small business owners in Utah. Through the sandbox program, he provided a variety of legal services, including legal document reviews, attorney consultations, and trademark registrations.
The final section of the report on regulatory innovation provides more background on Utah’s regulatory sandbox program and recent developments in Arizona and other states. This includes examining the free licensed expert model.
The Innovation Center was established in 2016 and plans to release a supplement on innovation in legal education at the 2023 ABA Midterm Meeting in February.
