Freeway improvement projects will require closures or road restrictions in the Phoenix area this weekend (March 10-13), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers should allow extra time and plan alternate routes.

The following freeway restrictions are scheduled:

Southbound I-17 is closed between Cactus Road and North Street from 8 a.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday (March 11). For the sidewalk improvement project. Southbound I-17 is also closed at Greenway and Thunderbird roads. Detour: Consider using the southbound SR 51 eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) into downtown Phoenix as an alternate freeway route. Southbound I-17 drivers can exit and use the south bound 19th or 35th avenues before the closure.

Northbound I-17 is closed between North Avenue and Yorkshire Drive (Union Hills Drive North) from 11 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday. (March 13) for a pavement improvement project. Northbound I-17 at Bethany Home Road and Glendale Avenue on-ramps are also closed. Detour: To reach I-17 past the closure, consider using northbound SR 51 to westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway). Northbound I-17 drivers should consider exiting before the closure and using northbound 19th or 35th avenues.

Westbound US 60 is closed between Alma School Road and McClintock Drive from 9pm Friday to 5am Monday (March 13). For the sidewalk improvement project. Both Loop 101 westbound US 60 ramps are closed. Westbound US 60 on-ramps at Steppley, Mesa and Country Club drives are also closed. Detour: Consider using alternate freeway lanes to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain or Santan freeways). Westbound US 60 drivers may consider exiting before the closure and using westbound Baseline Road or Southern Avenue to travel beyond the closure.

Northbound SR 143 (Hohokam Expressway) to Westbound I-10 overpass) is closed from 10 a.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. (March 13) for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Detour: Motorists traveling to Sky Harbor Airport should consider heading west from I-10 to 24th Street or Buckeye Road to reach the airport’s west entrance. NOTE: Northbound 48th Street/SR 143 will be closed to one lane between Broadway Road and University Drive from 7 a.m. until Saturday, March 11, 2010 and then closed (same area) from 7 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday (March 13). Times are adjustments. Detours include eastbound Broadway Road to northbound Priest Drive and westbound University Drive. The eastbound I-10 “connector ramp” between 48th Street and Broadway Road is closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (March 13).

Westbound Loop 303 between I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway is closed Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (March 11) for new spare parts construction. Detour: Beyond the closure, consider using westbound SR 74 to southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to connect with Loop 303.

Eastbound I-10 (to Tucson) narrows to one Riggs Road and the Gila River Bridge (near SR 587) from 9am Sunday to 5pm Monday (March 13) for a sidewalk improvement project. Westbound I-10 (toward Phoenix) will then be narrowed to one lane between the Gila River Bridge and Riggs Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights (March 13-16). Allow extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

ADOT plans and builds new freeways, additional lanes and other improvements in the Phoenix area as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Most of the projects are partially funded by Proposition 400, approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
