According to international data, the improvement of key ESG and CSR parameters creates barriers to talent acquisition

London, February 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Unit4, a leader in enterprise cloud applications for mid-market service organizations, today announced the findings of its second annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) – Future of Business Index. The survey shows that accelerating business transformation has made significant progress in ESG in the two years since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, but much work remains.

Unit 4 surveyed 3,450 respondents across 12 global markets to gain insight into how people, policy and technology changes over the past 12 months have impacted business, including ESG outcomes, key metrics for modern organisations. As companies compete for top talent, improvements in ESG initiatives and corporate social responsibility (CSR) can remove barriers to recruitment and retention.

Key findings

  • Durability has been improved: 24% of respondents said their organization was doing very well in meeting sustainability goals by 2022, a significant improvement over the 19% who reported it in 2021.
  • ESG performance is stronger: 69% of organizations say they are now in a better position to meet ESG and CSR goals due to accelerated change in the workplace
  • A weak ESG creates a talent barrier: 20% of respondents perceived that their company has weak ESG credentials
  • Recruiting and retaining diverse talent lags behind: 36% of responding businesses said they struggle to find and retain employees across generational mix and other key diversity categories
  • Most organizations are not prioritizing diversity: 25% of respondents said their organizations plan to improve diversity.

Embracing flexible working can lead to ESG improvements.
The progress in meeting sustainability and ESG goals suggests that the acceleration of digitization and flexible working has had a positive impact on sustainability.
This makes sense in the context of the outbreak. Widespread adoption of remote work, reduced fixed office space, geographic constraints affecting workforce diversity, less business travel, and greater reliance on information for business decision-making all contribute to achieving sustainability goals. But more than a third of respondents say they face challenges in recruiting and retaining diverse employees across categories, and it’s worrying that only a quarter plan to improve diversity.
