Generally, when people give advice on travel essentials, it revolves around loud headphones, portable chargers, international adapters, etc. Well, I guess it’s not until you forget something on a trip that you realize how important it is to you on a trip. at home. I came across it on my current trip.
I forgot to pack a hat or sweater
I’m currently on a review trip, which is taking me to Peru, New Zealand and more. As usual, I only pack before I leave home for my trip – I hate to pack earlier, once Winston finds out my luggage is out and I don’t want him to feel stressed. I will try to pick up more of the disappearing act.
As I am a fashionista (Ford, a more fashion forward person in his relationship, has a different perspective) my last minute packing is never a problem. It’s really just a matter of throwing some underwear and socks into my bag and deciding which of my athletic clothes to take. I could basically carry it in my sleep… or so I thought.
I guess I’m a little rusty on trips like this because within minutes of arriving at the Miami airport I realized I didn’t have a hoodie, sweatshirt, or any kind of long-sleeved top.
Why a hoodie is important for travel
Of course, the obvious answer is “If you’re going somewhere cold, it’s best to pack warm clothes.” I’m going to New Zealand for a short time, which is the tail end of winter, and it’s a little colder than what I’m used to in Miami.
But the use of a hoodie while traveling is more than desirable in cold weather, at least for me:
- Airport terminals are often ridiculously cold, especially Miami Airport; I feel like it drops below 25+ degrees when you walk in during the summer, and it’s consistently the coldest airport I’ve ever felt.
- Airplanes are often cold, and the more tired you are, the more likely you are to freeze.
- If you’re flying, a roll-up hat makes a great pillow. This is useful if you’re on a flight that doesn’t offer a pillow, but even more helpful if you have a pillow for extra support.
- If I’m trying to land on a non-flat bed airplane seat, I find that having the “hood” on is ideal for sleeping. You can rest your head on the headrest “gadget” with your hoodie on, and it’s about as comfortable as you’ll get.
I can’t count how many times in the past few days I’ve thought to myself how great it would be to have a hoodie. Unfortunately I wasn’t in an area with any shopping, and I’m even searching airport terminals for them. A $500+ duty-free sweater at a designer store at LAX, I’ve never experienced anything.
When I’m on airplanes or in airports, I spend more than half my time wearing sweaters, because I’m always so comfortable.
at last
I probably feel more strongly about this than others, but a hoodie, more than anything else, is something I try to travel without. It doesn’t matter where I go, it’s always important. If I could only travel with a hoodie or headphones, I’d choose the former.
Am I the only one who is always on #TeamHoodie when traveling?
