Working out has long been linked to a host of physical and mental health benefits, such as boosting stamina and strength, and improving blood circulation. Moving your body also uplifts your mood and gives you a sense of accomplishment and empowerment from achieving your fitness goals. One might find that a lit-from-within glow follows, too.
Being drenched in sweat from working out, however, warrants caution for skin. Sweating may lead to bacteria buildup on skin, which can clog pores and cause breakouts. It’s a chain reaction, so it’s important to have a post-workout skin care routine to avoid breakouts. The routine doesn’t have to be hefty; it just calls for simple yet effective skin care essentials to take care of your skin after exercising. Scroll through for tips to follow post-workout for every skin type.
Cleanse skin
As soon as you’re finished exercising, cleanse your skin. It’s imperative not to delay this first step to avoid a buildup of dirt and sweat, which can result in breakouts. Ideally, you should double cleanse with an oil cleanser that breaks down sweat and excess oil, and then follow up with a gel or foam cleanser to remove dirt and other impurities in pores. Opt for a gentle cleanser and steer clear of harsh exfoliants as skin is most sensitive post-workout (flushed skin can get easily irritated). After cleansing, splash your face with cold water to shut pores. If you plan to run a quick errand post-workout, then carry micellar water and handy cotton pads in your workout bag for a quick wipe when needed.
Apply serum
A serum is a nice addition to a post-workout skin care routine as it soothes and nourishes skin, and calms any redness after breaking a sweat. Most serums boast a lightweight texture that quickly penetrates into the skin for fast and visible results. They give skin a hydration boost, and usually feature active ingredients to target specific skin concerns and protect skin from free radicals and other environmental aggressors. Another benefit is that serums can add a sheen over skin to bring out your natural glow.
Moisturize skin
Post-workout, your skin may become rosy from increased blood circulation. To calm things down a notch, use moisturizers with soothing and anti-inflammatory effects. Look for ingredients like green tea extract, aloe vera extract, centella asiatica extract, niacinamide and ceramide, which help calm inflammation and redness. Gel-type moisturizers and water creams are great for this skin care step as they replenish skin hydration while feeling comfortable on skin thanks to the featherweight formulas.
Apply sunscreen
No matter what time of day or how glum the weather is (unless it’s pitch dark outside), use sunscreen! Having a sun care product in your routine is a must and should never be compromised. If you are worried about skin feeling congested from using sunscreen post-workout, fear not as there are plenty of sunscreens in lightweight formulas that absorb seamlessly while effectively protecting skin from UV rays. Opt for sun gels or sun essences featuring skin-soothing ingredients and refreshing textures. If you want lightweight coverage and an even skin tone, a tinted moisturizer with SPF protection should do the trick.
