Chongqing, a traditional industrial powerhouse, is building itself into a smart city through digital innovation, industry insiders and experts said at the fourth Smart China Expo on Monday.
This year’s three-day technology event under the theme “Smart City” attracted 557 companies and organizations from 19 countries and regions.
A platform to showcase the latest technologies, the expo is spread over an area of 90,000 square meters and showcases more than 1,560 application scenarios in over 30 areas including intelligent manufacturing, smart transportation and smart communities. Glasses-free 3D, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are also on display at the exhibition.
As the gateway to southwestern China and a major industrial base, Chongqing, located on the upper Yangtze River, has played an important role in the country’s development, including as a national defense manufacturing center in the 1960s.
It has also established the largest IT industrial cluster in the world and has become one of China’s largest automobile manufacturing centers. It aims to build a famous city and smart manufacturing powerhouse, home to more than 5,000 high-tech companies and contributing 19 percent of the dynamic city’s industrial output, local officials said.
The annual expo has been held in Chongqing since 2018 to showcase new products, technologies, business formats and cutting-edge technology through conferences, exhibitions, meetings and competitions.
A number of guests, including foreign Nobel laureates and Turing laureates, Chinese academics, experts and representatives of industry leaders such as Huawei Technologies Co, Alibaba Group and Changan Auto, raised the topic of the smart city at the summit held after the opening ceremony.
Huawei Senior Vice President Lu Yong said during a video conference that Huawei is actively working with Chongqing to build a smart city.
“As a witness to China’s smart urban development, Huawei believes that in the near future AI will be as popular as electricity in cities, and the power of AI will be felt everywhere,” he said.
