Philadelphia (WPVI) — Philly Fashion Week kicks off on Friday, and one of the models will be representing more than just a designer brand. It represents people with disabilities.
“I like to think I’m a man of many hats,” Kyle Woodland says of his multifaceted career.
The 26-year-old can currently be seen strutting down runways with his tall frame and shoulder-length locks posing for various designers and brands.
His photos get a lot of looks. But there’s one thing they don’t say about looking at Kyle.
“(Since I was 2 years old) I’ve been learning and dealing with autism — I have autism and pervasive developmental disorder,” he said.
The two handicaps make it very difficult to navigate the modeling world.
“Coming into this industry, people are really intolerant of people with autism spectrum disorder,” Woodland said. “Everything is really fast. And when you have autism, sometimes you want to take time to process things. Sometimes when you have autism, it’s really hard to read the class.”
With the help of his agency, Mainline Models in Glen Mills, Kyle’s first year in business has been a success, landing national campaigns and appearing in New York Fashion Week.
“They love it,” says Lauren Colden, owner and director of Maine Line Models, of the designers and stores that stock Woodland.
“He’s a go-getter! And he won’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” she said.
Kyle brings the same honest attitude to every booking, including Philly Fashion Week.
“I tell them right off the bat, like, hey, I’m very creative. I’m smart, but I have autism spectrum disorder,” he said.
Such transparency is important for people with any disability, advocates say. Vicki Landers, founder and executive director of Disability Pride PA, says no one should feel the need to hide a disability.
“One in four people has a disability, either visible or invisible,” Landers said. I think everyone should be proud of who they are.
Part of Kyle’s success includes the support he received from the agency.
“One of the fashion shows he went to, one of my books went to the show with him,” Colden said.
But for the most part, Woodland shines on his own, including appearing in the Netflix movie “Hustle” with Adam Sandler.
“Adam Sandler is a really down-to-earth guy,” he says of the star, who took time to pose with him.
Woodland is also lighting up the big screen and computer screen with his own YouTube show, The Kyle Woodland Show. By sharing his story, he hopes to change the face of autism.
“I’m a strong advocate of being yourself,” he said. “If you are trying to hide yourself or be someone else, you will never succeed or show your true self.”
