The Golden Triangle will use $ 11.3 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to renovate and expand the regional airport.

According to a press release issued by GTRA, GTRA and FAA both announced the award on Thursday as part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Labor Law Program.

“The second floor of the terminal renovation project, in addition to the Jet Bridge, will provide access and capacity for large regional aircraft, which will ensure that the airport meets near and long-term requirements for modern regional and major aircraft,” the statement read.

Matt Dowell, the director general of the airport, believes that with the addition of space, the airport will have the capacity for more flights and destinations and possibly more. Delta is now the only commercial airline flying through GTRA, offering four daily flights to Atlanta and beyond.

“If Delta Airlines wanted to offer a new market or a new airline, we would have the space to do so,” Dowell told Dispatch. “So it allows us to grow and bring us more jobs and more air services.”

The second floor terminal will be built on a concrete roof over the terminal. According to Bill Witt, senior project manager at JBHM Architects, the roof was installed in 2009. JBHM has been working with the airport since the 1980s.

“Airport and airport directors and board directors have had the foresight to plan this day for many years and JBHM is fortunate to be involved at every stage,” Whittle said.

The jet bridge, a fenced-in tunnel used by most major airports to transport passengers from the terminal to the aircraft cabin, replaces the airport’s existing exterior.

The redevelopment project is now entering the final stage of design; GTRA plans to add approximately 8,200 square feet to the second floor of the terminal building. Dowl and his team plan to begin construction in May 2023 as soon as the bids are completed.

The 2021 Labor Law has been approved to modernize roads, bridges, transit, railways, ports, airports, broadband, drinking water and sewage infrastructure. It will solve the country’s aging infrastructure by providing $ 5 billion in competition for airport terminal development projects.

According to the FAA website, more than 90 projects have been funded across 85 different airports across the country. Improvements at these airports will include benefits such as increased energy efficiency, promoting competition, greater access for people with disabilities, and building new air traffic control towers.
