A key freeway connection opens at Otay Mesa, improving cross-border travel

Caltrans and SANDAG opened a key highway connector in Otay Mesa on Tuesday that promises to greatly improve cross-border traffic.

The $28.9 million project will connect southbound Route 125 to westbound Route 905, which will connect the ports of entry in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.

“The opening of the new connector is a critical step in improving the movement of people and goods throughout our national mega-region,” said Caltrans District 11 Director Gustavo Dalada. “With a new direct westbound connection from East County, we will help alleviate traffic congestion and travel delays, which will improve mobility in the border area.”

California Transportation Commissioner Larissa Falcon said the new link “will help achieve our vision of a border corridor connected to the entire region, improving transportation equity and economic growth for both states.”

The project will also connect the future third port of entry east of Otay Mesa with a special extension of Route 11 set to break ground next month.

“The completion of SR 11 will be a major step in the development of the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry,” said Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas. “Today we are one step closer to making a new border crossing a reality that will reduce wait times, boost trade growth and strengthen our bilateral economy.”
