LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Like many of us in the commonwealth this season, Lindsey Gibson is trying on hats. This year, for her and her family, these hats mean more than a fashionable derby accessory.
Gibson is helping to pursue her mother’s passion project — Kim Heath’s Hats for Hope fashion show.
Gibson’s mother, Kim Heath, passed away in January after a long battle with metastatic melanoma.
She wanted to reach out and help others who were going through the same problem that she was going through.
During her illness, Heath was treated at the University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center.
Before her death, Heath was able to help other cancer patients by organizing a fashion show with the center.
Her family and friends are making sure her passion project comes true.
“You know, we always say that your pain can be your prisoner or your purpose. And we made this our sole purpose. Everyone who loved her and was involved really dove into this,” said Chris Fulkerson, director of the fashion show and a friend of Heath’s.
Cancer patients and survivors, UoftL Health physicians and Heath’s family and friends will be included in the fashion show. Social Hate, maker of derby hats, is matching the hats to the costumes featured at the event.
“We need to come together as a community and support these cancer patients on stage, support all cancer patients, honor those who have lost their battle with cancer,” Fulkerson said.
It looks like Heath’s legacy will continue to grow beyond this year’s fashion show.
“I have big plans to take this and make it bigger and you know what it’s like to take what my mom started and make it bigger,” Gibson said.
Giving hope to all cancer patients one hat at a time.
